BREAKING: Congress Reaches Government Funding AND Debt Limit Deal, President Trump Praises!
President Trump Warns House Speaker Mike Johnson, GOP on Debt Ceiling: Resolve Situation by Inauguration or Face Primaries.
December 20, 2024
A deal to avert a partial government shutdown has reportedly been reached in Congress after Republican lawmakers scuttled the initial continuing resolution (CR), which had ballooned to over 1,500 pages and contained a plethora of Democratic Party spending priorities.
The new CR essentially cuts the entirety of the extraneous add-ons from the first bill but does include several provisions for much-needed disaster relief for the victims of several recent hurricanes and healthcare extenders.
While the agreement’s details are not officially public, it appears the funding compromise will suspend the debt ceiling for two years into 2027—a major ask of President Donald J. Trump to avoid handing Democrats legislative leverage in the initial months of his administration.
Following the leak of what is including the CR, President Trump—in a post on Truth Social—praised the plan, urging lawmakers to back it.
“SUCCESS in Washington!” President Trump declared, adding:
“Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good Deal for the American People. The newly agreed to American Relief Act of 2024 will keep the Government open, fund our Great Farmers and others, and provide relief for those severely impacted by the devastating hurricanes.”
The rightful President continued: “A VERY important piece, VITAL to the America First Agenda, was added as well – The date of the very unnecessary Debt Ceiling will be pushed out two years, to January 30, 2027. Now we can Make America Great Again, very quickly, which is what the People gave us a mandate to accomplish.”
“All Republicans, and even the Democrats, should do what is best for our Country, and vote ‘YES’ for this Bill, TONIGHT!” President Trump concluded.

However, the Trump-endorsed plan to prevent a government shutdown failed to pass, with 38 GOP members joining Democrats in opposition.
The proposed legislation aimed to extend government funding for three months, providing over $100 billion in disaster relief and aid for farmers. It also sought to suspend the nation’s borrowing limit for two years.
However, the bill fell short of the required majority.
Some Republicans voted ‘no’ because the bill increases spending by over $100 billion, raises the debt limit for $4 trillion, and fails to provide meaningful spending cuts.
