New Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has outlined his top priorities for the American military after being sworn in by Vice President JD Vance on Saturday.
“It is the privilege of a lifetime to lead the warriors of the Department of Defense,” Hegseth said in a statement.
“We will put America First, and we will never back down.”
Hegseth identified three ways to improve America’s military capabilities in line with President Trump’s vision of achieving “peace through strength”: “restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding our military, and reestablishing deterrence.”
To restore the warrior ethos, the military must build a sense of unity and shared purpose.
To rebuild the military, its capabilities must be better aligned with the threats America faces, its industrial base must be rebuilt, it must be financially accountable and it must be able to deploy emerging technologies rapidly on the battlefield.
“We will remain the strongest and most lethal force in the world,” Hegseth said.
Finally, to reestablish deterrence, the government must bolster homeland defense and also work with allies to counter longstanding and emerging threats.
Hegseth mentioned China specifically.
“We will work with allies and partners to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific by communist China, as well as supporting the President’s priority to end wars responsibly and reorient to key threats,” Hegseth said.
Hegseth said key priorities will be “lethality, meritocracy, accountability, standards, and readiness.”
“Our enemies will neither rest nor relent. And neither will we. We will stand shoulder to shoulder to meet the urgency of this moment,” he said.
“Together we will accomplish the President’s mission to deter war, and if necessary, defeat and destroy our enemies.”
Hegseth was confirmed with a tie-breaker vote from JD Vance during his confirmation session on Friday. It was only the second time in American history that a vice president has intervened to decide a vote.
As Hegseth takes charge at the Pentagon, here’s what changes could be in store
WASHINGTON (AP) — When Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth steps into his office on the Pentagon’s third floor E Ring on Monday morning, he will have a daunting array of issues to tackle — from global conflicts and border security to administrative tasks.
At the top of his list is addressing President Donald Trump’s priority to strengthen the U.S. military presence along the southern border and reviewing whether active-duty forces should be used for law enforcement — something done rarely.

Dozens of other issues will compete for his attention, including developing the Pentagon’s massive budget, decisions about aid to Ukraine, support for the ceasefire in Gaza, troop deployments in the Middle East.
Not to mention President Trump directives to rid the federal government of diversity programs and personnel as well as moves to cut waste and remove any lingering Biden administration backers.

In a message to the force shortly after he was sworn in Saturday, Hegseth cited the challenges he sees ahead.
Some are ones his predecessors also faced, such as reorienting the military from decades of a Mideast focus and better deterring China.
Continued conflict in the region, including the October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, has made that shift impossible to execute.
Hegseth also told service members about other priorities, including strengthening the defense industrial base and getting the Pentagon to pass an audit while ensuring that the U.S. remains “the strongest and most lethal force in the world.”
Already, support staff have been meeting with military leaders, including the now-captured Gen. CQ Brown Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

But Hegseth will get to experience what many describe as “drinking from a firehose” as he works to quickly get up to speed on what his 2.1 million service members and 780,000 civilians in the department are doing.
Among them are tens of thousands serving overseas, including in combat zones.
